We all need a vacation. But if you’re like most of us, you’re trying to pinch pennies and save money every way you can. This summer, extra traveling expenses for hotels, restaurants, and fuel costs may be impossible.

However, you still can have a vacation. In fact, with just a little planning, your family could have the best vacation yet, by enjoying time together building memories right at home.

Although an out of town destination isn’t in the budget, there are plenty of fun ways to vacation. Here are 10 easy staycation ideas that won’t break the bank.

Vacation takes a lot of time and money! This year we are trying a staycation instead!

Backyard Camping

Pull out the sleeping bags and pitch a tent in your own backyard. Cook dinner on the grill or over an open fire, share stories, and sing a few campfire songs.

Movie Marathon

Visit a drive-in for a double feature or binge watch a favorite family series in front of your own TV. Serve popcorn and movie-style snacks, and end the movie marathon with your own trivia creation where each family member asks questions related to the show.

Tour Your Town

When’s the last time your family toured your own city or town? Spend some time celebrating all those special places that make your town so great. Browse local shops and don’t forget those extra special hidden spaces, too.

Cooking Class

Many food shops and community centers offer cooking classes. Check your local news for workshops or create your own family cooking class by watching a free lesson on YouTube at home.

Photography Tour

Grab your camera and take a photo tour. Allow family members to take turns snapping pictures around town or while you’re out at a special event. Then spend an evening creating your own scrapbook of your family staycation.

Local Library

Most libraries offer plenty of free programs filled with games, movies, and hands-on reading fun. Check with your local library to make sure your family participates in a few of these activities, too.

Take a Canoe

Is there a local lake or river nearby? Rent a kayak or canoe and spend your day floating down the river. It’s a super fun way to spend time outdoors and relax.

Visit a Museum

History and art museums are filled with entertainment, and most offer free days or discount rates for special times. Check with your local museum to find out the best time for your family to visit, along with traveling exhibits that are offered or seasonal events.

Make a Splash

Is there a local waterpark or public swimming pool in town? If not, just turn on a few sprinklers and make a splash in your own backyard. Pick up a few dollar store water guns and a kiddie pool, share a few frozen treats, or create a water feature obstacle course.

Take a Hike

Grab your backpacks and visit your state park or find a bicycle trail. Spend your day enjoying nature’s beauty and find a fun spot for an outdoor family picnic, too.

No matter what you choose to do for your staycation, just remember to enjoy your family. Build lasting memories, strengthen family ties, and create simple experiences where everyone has a chance to reconnect and have fun.
