I love giving gift cards, especially at Christmas. They are perfect for those hard to buy for people (and you know I mean teenagers and guys!)
Hi, I’m Julie from Sum of their Stories, this year I’ve been making simple little wallets with felt and ribbon to make those gift cards feel a little bit more special. In the past I’ve made little origami wallets from paper but these felt ones are really easy to make. I used a sewing machine but if you don’t sew you could use a strong glue. It’s only 2 short straight seams though so a perfect practice project for sewing beginners.
You will need:
- Felt
- Ribbon
- Thread (either matching or contrasting)
- A Sewing Machine (you could glue or stitch by hand if you prefer though)
All these measurements assume your gift card is 8.5 x 5.5 cm
Cut a rectangle of felt 11.5 x 19.5 cm (4.5 x 7.5 “) and a length of ribbon about 13cm (5”)This is basically the width of your gift card plus a seam allowance on each side and 3 times the height plus a little bit more. If your gift card is a different size it is easy to adjust the size of your felt. I think the photo above explains it best.
- Fold your felt in half, length ways, measure down 5cm (2″) , mark with a pin, then cut from the corner to the pin
- Remove the pin and open the felt out. Fold the bottom edge up to just below the place the pin was. Place the ribbon across about 1.5cm from the edge as shown holding in place with pins
- Stitch in a straight line 1cm in from each edge on both side seams
I then tied off the thread ends, threaded them onto a needle and poked the needle into the wallets to lose the ends inside. This is because I am a little bit over fussy about things like this! You could just do a few stitches in reverse at each end to secure, or tie a knot and trim the ends close and I’m sure it would be fine.
That’s it – done! Now you know how easy they are, make loads more!
Of course you could tuck cash in these instead – notes, I think coins would probably fall out.
I’ve loved being here again today to share this simple craft idea, thank you for having me. I know it might seem a little bit early for Christmas but it doesn’t hurt to get a few makes sorted out early. I know come December I’ll be glad I did!

Glad you like them Tamar. I have a habit of over explaining sometimes so I’m glad you’ve found my tutorial helpful!
