This homemade BBQ seasoning is not only great for a dry rub, marinade, and a seasoning for veggies, but it is also Paleo, Whole30 compliant, gluten free, dairy free, low carb, and really, really delicious.
One of my favorite parts of doing the Whole30 diet was making my own seasoning mixes. It is one of those things I had always wanted to do but just never really got around to. But one of the big challenges with the Whole30 diet is finding seasoning mixes, or really just any foods without all the added sugar and preservatives. So I got it into gear and bought about a million different spices to start creating my own.
It definitely took some trial and error to find get the right combination of flavors in the right proportions to make something really tasty, and barbecue was one of the hardest! Barbecue sauce by definition has quite a bit of sugar in it so to get to taste just right without all the sugar was a challenge.
To be honest it does not taste like BBQ Sauce right out of the bottle, but I actually think it tastes better! It captures the same husky flavors of barbeque sauce but leaves behind the sweetness which works perfectly when you use it to marinade chicken or sprinkle over veggies to throw on the grill. Even though we haven’t been on any special diet for many months we still LOVE the homemade seasonings and use them in our everyday cooking.
Whole30 Barbecue Seasoning Recipe
To make this seasoning you just need 9 common spices that you mix together to make a little magic.
- Kosher Salt
- Mustard Powder
- Chili Powder
- Ground Cumin
- Black Pepper
- Garlic Powder
- Ground Cayenne Pepper
- Onion Powder
Just take the amounts as directed mix together and store in an air tight container.
This mix is so good for so many things! During the Whole30 we really struggled with variety which is one of the things that made seasoning mixes so great. Being able to have a variety of different flavorings to use on meat, side dishes, dips, and dressings right at my finger tips that were healthy and wholesome was a total game changer.
Some of our favorite ways to use the seasoning are:
- Sprinkle on meat as a dry rub before grilling, we especially loved it on chicken!
- Add seasoning and 1-2 Tbsp of olive oil to a ziplock bag with meat for a marinade
- Mix 1 cup mayo with 1 Tbsp seasoning and chill for 1-2 hours for a seasoned dip.
- Sprinkle over veggies and drizzle with olive oil then grill or roast
- Mix in with cauliflower rice for seasoned “rice” side dish
- Mix into chicken salad for a super flavor kick
I hope you enjoy this recipe! We loved using it during our time doing the Whole30 diet, but really have enjoyed incorporating it into our everyday meals. If you give it a try I would love to hear what you think in the comments or tag me in a photo on Instagram @easyfamilyrecipes!
