Christmas is approaching on all of us too quickly. I’m always searching for fun, new and educational games to get my kids for Christmas or birthdays. I feel a bit overwhelmed when I’m at the store staring at all the games. I’m just a mom so of course this is my opinion but these games seems to be the best rated and most popular among kids.
Educational Board Games for Kindergarteners
- Chutes and Ladders- Kids get to practice their counting skills, along with climbing up ladders or sliding down slides with their game piece. This game has been around since I was little but it never seems to get old.
- Sequence for Kids- In this game kids get to practice their matching, and memory skills.
- Sorry- The main educational piece in this game is counting skills. The point of this game is to make it back home to your after making the voyage around the board.
- Blokus- This game helps kids learn geometric and spatial skills. The goal is to get as many of your shapes on the board but each one has to touch the same color as the other.
- Scrabble Junior- Kids get to practice forming words and practicing ABC’s without even knowing it. They can practice forming words while following the clues already printed on the board.
- Guess Who?- This game allows kids to practice picking out features on faces and try to guess the opponents face/card they chose. They get to knock down faces one by one to narrow down their selection to guess.
- Hi Ho Cherry-O- Kids have so much fun putting fruit in their baskets they don’t even realize they are learning addition and subtraction skills. Whoever puts all their fruit in the baskets first wins.
- Hoot Owl Hoot- In this game kids can learn simple strategy skills. Kids can help each other get their owls back to their nests before the sun comes up.
- Spot It- The purpose of this game is to spot the common object between the two cards in front of you. This games helps kids observation skills.
- Jenga- This could go over really well or be a big disaster but kids that pay a little more attention to detail are going to really love this game. Hand-eye coordination and patience is a big lesson in this game.
- Candy Land- An absolute classic that has been around for as long as I can remember. Kids make their way across the board while counting the colored squares on their card. By the end of this game kids are going to be dreaming about their own special candy land.
- Monopoly Junior- In this version kids get to buy fun exciting properties like a candy store, pet store or a video game arcade.
- Zingo- It’s like BINGO but with pictures. I feel like with the pictures instead of letters or numbers, the kids can play this game without an adult around to help.
- Ker Plunk- Carefully remove the sticks while dropping as little as marbles as possible. This game helps kids develop strategy skills and of course patience.
- Trouble- Pop all around the board to try and make it home with all four of your pegs. Watch out because you might stumble upon “trouble” along the way.
- Operation- The kids will have have “operating” to help Cavity Sam feel better by removing his ailments.
I hope this list helps all of you for your holiday and birthday shopping. I feel like my kids ages 5 & 7 have really been into games lately, so Im definitely buying a few of these that we don’t already own for Christmas. If you have any comments or games to add I’d love to hear from you.
