If you’re kids are anything like mine, they seem happiest on vacation when they’re at the beach. They love searching for new sea creatures and marine life. And lets be honest….I’m happiest at the beach as well. My family and I have visited every beach in Rhode Island and I’ve compiled a list of our favorite beaches for all of you.
There’s nothing like the sand in your toes and the salty water in your hair. You know that saying “beach hair … don’t care”… that saying is perfect for me and my kids. Time flies when were at the beach and I feel like I have the supplies needed down to a science. If you’re looking to get away from the beach, check out my Things to Do In Newport, RI.
Top 5 Rhode Island Beaches
- Narragansett Beach– This is my MOST favorite beach to visit in RI. Beautiful sand and rolling waves makes this place the best for sand castles and boogie boarding. Parking can be a little pricey so be prepared to pay around $20 a day. One trick we have is going after 4pm, then you don’t have to pay for parking. We usually bring a picnic dinner and watch the sunset on the beach. The beach also has a beachside grill that is open during the day.
- Easton’s Beach– Nestled right below the Cliff Walk in Newport. This is such a beautiful beach with breathtaking views all around. If you’re kids like to boogie board this is the spot. There is always surf rentals and Del’s lemonade trucks. The beach also offers a beachside grill and an antique indoor carousel. This beach can get very busy so make sure if you plan to go….. you might want to get there early. You also have to pay a small fee to park at this beach.
- Watch Hill Westerly Beach– If you’re a Taylor Swift plan this is YOUR beach to go to. This beach is nestled right next to her beach home. This beach also features great boogie boarding waves for your kids. The views are incredible and the sand is soft. The town is such a fun place to see as well featuring the oldest functioning flying horse carousel in Rhode Island. Parking can be a bit pricey and you do have to walk about a block to the beach.
- Second Beach– This beach features well kept sand and lots of parking. You do have to pay for parking but there is lots of it. This beach is full of locals and adventurous tourists because its a little of the path. The water here tends to be fairly calm so it’s not ideal for boogie boarding but it is a great place for kids to swim and play in the water. I love coming here because I can relax on the beach while the kids play in the water because it’s so calm.
- Mackerel Cove Beach– If you’re looking for a great place to explore and find crabs, fish, sea glass, clams, and so much more this is the place. Nestled on the beautiful island Jamestown, this beach is sure to make you feel peaceful and relaxed. Every time we visit this beach my kids make “aquariums” full of marine life. I love their little imaginations. This beach is very secluded from the waves and doesn’t get deep very quickly so you’re family can swim and play at ease. You do have to pay to park but it’s only $15 a day.
I must say I think it’s a Rhode Island thing but most beaches have a fee to park. That was something I had to get used to when we moved here but the views and fun are worth every penny. Make sure you have a little cash on hand to pay for your parking spot.
What to pack in your beach bag for the family?
I’m sure you figured out by now that I really love the beach so after years and years of going I have the needed essentials down to a science and I will share a few with you. My kids are a no longer in diapers or floaties so it makes things a little easier. These are a few of my MUST have items for the beach.
- Sand Free and Water Resistant Beach Blanket– This is a must for the beach…… Unlike towels they repel sand and water and when its time to leave just shake it and fold it up. I love these also because they don’t get hot on your feet.
- Beach Tent– I love our beach tent and it’s a great way to escape the sun. This one is super easy to set up and folds up super small. The tent is a great place for your little ones to take a nap or keep the food cold.
- Baby Powder– I know you’re all wondering… why baby powder. This is the best stuff to get sand off of your body when it is dry. Sand can be so tricky and itchy but sprinkle some baby powder on, run it with your hands and the sand is completely gone. WE LOVE IT. I always have a few bottles in my beach bag.
- Beach Cooler– I have a smaller beach cooler that is waterproof and looks like a bag. I will link it here. I love having a small cooler full of cut up fruit and veggies. I also bring hummus, water, string cheese, and yogurts. Freeze water in ziplock bags and place a few in your cooler in the morning, it should last most of the day.
- Boogie Boards– Who doesn’t love a good day of boogie boarding. This activity is great for any age young or old. Boogie boards are also great for laying on in the water too.
- Sunscreen– Don’t forget this crucial item. You always want to keep you skin safe and free of a burn. Make sure you re-apply every 2-3 hours to keep your family safe from the sun.
- Beach Umbrella– I love having a place where I can sit under that is shaded from the sun. It’s also a great place for the kids to sit while their eating snacks to get them out of the sun for a while.
- Good Beach Chairs– Our favorite chairs are the ones that you can carry like a backpack. Its makes carrying things to the beach easier because your hands are free.
- Sand Toys– Whatever age your kids are I don’t think they’re ever too old for sand castles. My kids love coming up with new designs for their castles.
- Snorkel Gear– Snorkeling is one of my favorite things to do in the ocean. Theres so much to see when your floating around. My kids love flipping around like they are fish.
- Small Fishing Net– This is one of the best things to have on hand. My kids love to try and catch little fish with this. It will keep them busy for hours.
And don’t forget lots and lots of WATER………….and snacks for the kids. Theres something about being outside but it seems like my kids are always asking for snacks.
