Vinyl Project Ideas
The options for customizing vinyl are truly endless!! Almost anything you can find with a smooth surface, vinyl will stick to. If you have a project with rough edges like wood, you can use your vinyl as a stencil and paint your design on. I have gathered some great project ideas along with the type of vinyl you should use for these projects. This is just a recommendation so make sure you know the vinyl you are wanting to use. I will recommend the brand and why I like it in this post. Remember this is only a guide and you don’t have to follow it if you don’t want to. I hope this inspires you and directs you on the right path for your project. I love vinyl and use it on so many things.
- Cups– Use Oracal 651 or Stencil vinyl. Vinyl is not dishwasher safe, but 651 can be use with success if you hand wash it. The other option is to use your vinyl as a stencil and paint your design on.
- Signs– Use Oracal 631 (indoor use) and Oracal 651 (outdoor use). Fun signs can be made with metal, wood, or other materials.
- Picture Frames– Use Oracal 631. Vinyl can be applies to glass to add to your picture or used independently like in a shadow box. You could also add the vinyl to the actual frame, like a saying or someone’s name.
- Notedbooks or Planners– Use Oracal 651. I recommend using 651, you are going to be using these a lot and 651 tends to stay on for longer periods.
- Car Windows– Use Oracal 651. Since the vinyl is most likely to get wet and dirty, 651 is the best choice.
- Walls– Use Oracal 631. When applying vinyl to the wall you want it to remove fairly easily.
- Containers– Use Oracal 651. If the labels are handled often, 651 will last longer. I use labels for containers to organize. My favorite place to organize and label containers is in the pantry. I also like to use it in the playroom with pictures or words on plastic containers. This makes clean up time at our house quick and easy.
- Dressers– Use Oracal 631. You can add picture labels to drawers or fun sayings to spice up any room. 631 is removable so I would recommend it over the other.
- Phone Case– Use Oracal 651. This is a great project to personalize any phone case.
- Silhouette Lid– Use Oracal 631. Your Silhouette needs special sayings on it too!! Put a fun saying on it or a great reminder like “Did you mark mat or no mat?”
- School Supplies– Use Oracal 651. These products are going to be handled over and over. You can easily add a fun twist to binders, pencil boxes, folders, and so much more. I even added HTV to my sons backpack this year.
- Birthday Boards/Banners– Use Oracal 631. You can use vinyl to dress up a foam board, banner or poster board. This would be a fun idea for birthdays, special project in school or any other occasion.
- Pallet Signs– Use Oracal 651 or Stencil. I LOVE making pallet wood signs but they an be a bit difficult since they are rough. If you want to sand it down a bit before applying it, that usually works better. A better alternative would be to use Oracal 631 to make a stencil to paint on the wood.
- Glass Blocks– Use Oracal 631. These blocks are generally used for decorations so Oracal 631 will work just fine.
- Tile– Use Oracal 631 (indoor use) and Oracal 651 (outdoor use). Some fun ideas for tiles are monograms or family names. I also like to put fun sayings on them and display them during the holidays. Tiles are a fun idea for teachers gifts as well.
- Laptop Case– Use Oracal 651. I use my laptop multiple times a day, so if you’re like me I recommend a strong vinyl like Oracal 651. I’ve had mine on over a year and it’s still going strong.
- Glass Jars– Use Oracal 651. You can pretty much decorate any jar you’d like. Some ideas are tip jars, piggy banks, mason jar, flower vase, or drinking glasses.
- Glass Cutting Boards– Use Oracal 651. This is a fun project or gift idea. Add vinyl to the underside of a glass cutting board. Use 651 since it will be washed often!
