It seems that birthday party and simple can not co-exist. First let me tell you how hard I try to keep it simple and then I will tell you how our Disney Princess Party made everything worth it!
I tried to make my son’s birthday party simple. We only had one family over, we ate dinner had a little cake, and played. Nothing fancy, but still I collapsed in exhaustion at the end.
I tried to make my daughter’s birthday simple. Just have it at the park where there is no cleaning before or after. Where the kids can just run around and be kids, no entertainment needed. BUT it was her first, so I wanted decorations, and then to make sure there was enough food and variety for picky eaters. Oh and we might as well have some water balloons for the kids to have fun with since it was so hot! And then it wasn’t simple anymore. I spent weeks prepping, I ran around like crazy the day of the party and never really got to enjoy the fruits of my labor.
I wanted to enjoy my kids and have fun with them like I should have on their birthdays. I wanted to smile and laugh and make memories! So I decided we would try again. Who cares if it wasn’t actually their birthday. We would have an unbirthday party! None of the stress, none of the chaos, just us and the kids enjoying the good stuff in life.
Since one of my all time favorite movies, The Little Mermaid is being released on Blu-ray, it gave me an excellent excuse to have some great fun with our little un-birthday party. Regardless of whether it is a birthday or un-birthday, every party needs to have two things as far as I am concerned… CAKE and PRESENTS!
So while the little ones napped I put together dinner along with a few treats to make our night extra memorable. When the kids woke up I told them it was time to go to our un-birthday party and they were a little confused at first, but when they realized what that meant, they got so So SO excited!
We ate a simple dinner and with the promise of cake at the end both kids finished everything on their plates. Since I wanted it to be special, BUT extremely low maintenance, I figured out a great compromise to make the cake amazingly cute but totally easy!
All you have to do to create Disney Princess Cupcakes is to make a frosting swirl on a cupcake and then insert a princess figurine (found here) into the frosting. You can get the recipe for my absolute FAVORITE buttercream here! I brainstormed up this idea while I was contemplating my plan and I couldn’t have been more pleased with how they turned out. The frosting makes a perfect skirt for a princess and the figurines are perfectly sized for the cupcake! If you want even less work you can just pick up cupcakes from your local grocery store or bakery. Most all of them sell cupcakes with a big frosting swirl on top these days!
After we finished off the cake, we headed to presents! Since we had our boy first, our baby girl doesn’t have too many girl toys, but today she was showered with all things princess! I think she loved it. She is only 14 months, but after she unwrapped her Ariel doll and I opened it for her she immediately started giving her kisses! I have never seen her do anything like that before! It was the sweetest! A memory that will last forever!
Both kids adored the cupcakes! My little man had Price Eric and of course my baby girl wanted her new BFF Ariel! After the cake was gone they continued playing at the table with their toys as we enjoyed being together.
We smiled. We laughed. We played. We enjoyed our Disney Princess Party and LOVED being together! Mission un-birthday was a smashing success! I’d say that it just might become a regular thing around here!
