If you are a guacamole lover this recipe is a MUST! Guacamole Chicken Salad combines everything delicious from guacamole into chicken salad to make it into a lunch you will crave day after day. It is creamy, rich and delicious. Filled with tangy Mexican flavors and hearty enough to fill you up!
What do you get when you combine the flavors of guacamole and the goodness of chicken salad? Quite possibly the most delicious lunch I have ever eaten! I absolutely adore guacamole. Everything from the creamy, rich avocado to the flavorful cilantro, to the tangy lime just puts me right into food heaven.
We eat guacamole a lot. We have it often as an appetizer when guests are over, but I also make all sorts of dinners from crockpot creamy chicken tacos, to dinner style healthier nachos so I can eat it as a meal too. But it had never hit me to combine it with chicken salad until now. Seriously… what was I thinking? Now I can eat it as an appetizer, lunch, or dinner, and it is even perfect to pack in a lunch box!
I mean it is kind of genius really, right? They are both creamy, rich and totally delicious! Chicken Salad is such a great neutral base that you can add whatever flavor you want to it to make all sorts of amazing flavors. I have done everything from Ranch Chicken Salad, to Greek Chicken Salad, to Cranberry Almond Chicken Salad, and even a Loaded Chicken Salad. They are all very different flavors, but all still chicken salad and all still CRAZY delicious! You can see all of my Best Chicken Salad Recipes here!
I am glad to post this just in time for football season too! I mean guacamole is great, but this is perfect for a tailgate appetizer since it is even heartier and feeds a crowd. So let’s dive into the recipe!

Guacamole Chicken Salad – Ingredients
To make this recipe you only need a few simple ingredients:
- 3 Cups Cooked Chicken Breast, shredded or cubed
- 2 Tbsp Sour Cream
- 2 Tbsp Mayonnaise
- 1 Cup Celery, finely chopped
- 1.5 Ripe Large Avocados, diced
- 1/4 Cup Yellow Onion, diced
- 1/2 Cup Fresh Cilantro, diced
- 1 Cup Chopped Tomatoes
- 1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
- 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
- Juice of 1/2 Large Lime
- 1 Jalapeno, seeded and finely chopped (optional)
All of the ingredients should look familiar and are very traditional for either guacamole or chicken salad.
Guacamole Chicken Salad – Instructions
- Place the chicken, celery, onions, avocado, cilantro and tomatoes in a large bowl and top with the sour cream, garlic powder, salt and lime juice. You can use shredded or cubed chicken in this recipe, it is all based on your preferences. I tend to like the texture of shredded better so that is what I usually do. Also, note that the quality of your chicken is an important part of how tasty this is overall. You can use any type of cooked shredded chicken in the recipe but my favorites are using rotisserie or baking a batch seasoned with salt and pepper and then easily shredding it like this. You can also use canned chicken or a batch from the crock pot, but I don’t think those turn out as well in texture when making chicken salad.Make sure your veggies are all chopped up finely so that they can evenly distribute through the mix to give you flavor in every bite. Also, chopping them up nice and small helps to make this easier to serve at a party or pack in a lunch box and eat since you don’t have to bite through anything large that requires silverware or makes a mess.
I like to really max out the veggies in chicken salad. It does a couple of things. First, it packs in way more nutrition in every bite. Since the flavors coat the salad, you can eat more healthy stuff and not even know it which is totally a win for both me and my kids. Also, it lowers the calorie count of the dish since the veggies are especially low calorie and adding more veggies per a serving will allow you to eat more with less calorie. Last, it makes the chicken salad serve far more people since you can add in a bunch of veggies like celery and really bulk it up with very little cost compared to the chicken or avocado. If you like less, you can reduce the amount of veggies, or add in others you prefer, but to me, healthy + less calories + less money per serving is like the holy grail!
- Mix well until everything is evenly coated and distributed throughout. There is really nothing too special in this step! It is a little easier if you mix the sour cream, mayo, garlic powder, salt and lime together first and then mix that into the chicken and veggies, but if you are in a rush you can just throw it all in and give it a toss. It works either way!
- Serve with tortilla chips, in an avocado, tomato, in a lettuce wrap, with crackers, on top of greens, or your favorite way to eat chicken salad.I love to serve this with tortilla chips when we do it for an appetizer for company or at a party, but if you are packing it for lunch it is delicious served in an avocado or sweet bell pepper half, as a lettuce wrap, on top of a green salad, or on toast as a sandwich. Really, you can’t go wrong here so just go with what sounds delicious to you!
- ENJOY! The best of guacamole and chicken salad awaits!
